I really agree with Olivia Somersille T-Shirt. I started German only in high school (sometimes you could start Spanish in 8th grade) and after several years of it, well into college, I still was extremely rusty when I went to Berlin a couple of years ago. I took a couple of years of Russian in graduate school, and because it’s been a decade and I don’t have a lot of time to use it, it’s fading fast. It’s hard to learn languages unless you start much younger than we do here. It’s a shame.

Learning a language, as you say, opens up doors. I understood English (which I grew up speaking correctly) better, from a linguistic perspective, *because* I studied other languages–even though, as I say, I’m not an expert communicator in any of Olivia Somersille T-Shirt. At least when I go someplace where I really have no experience with the language, I can tap into clues and figure some things out on the fly.
