I will be blunt here. With the exception of the Dangerous creature shirt, why the hell should you as a Brit be learning about those far distant societies/events rather than your own history or those that actually influenced British history such as the Romans and the Greeks? Because if there is a nation whose history is severely undertaught relative to its historical significance, it would be by far that of the British, not some random relatively globally insignificant society like the Mali or the Ashanti.

Anecdotal experience, but I have seen so Dangerous creature shirt about not learning X event/massacre/genocide in British Imperial history. Complete ignorance. If the British don’t even learn their own history properly (a history arguably more influential on the modern world and current events than that of any other country, by far), why the heck should they learn about some tiny little random civilization a continent away that has little influence, both historically and today? I do agree with you that school spends too much time teaching you useless sh*t like how people dressed or memorizing dates, but that does not mean they should be teaching you sh*t like the Malians or Ashanti that is quite possibly even more useless/irrelevant^ to British history.
