I do see that argument, however, I don’t believe that should hold back school boards from Dr Seuss sam I am shirt. This could be an independent study in which the student explores a figure who personally resonates with them. The problem with selecting the typical formula of a former national leader, a war and a usually extremist movement/group; Is that it produces this obscure and forgettable chain of events that rarely link together. This is usually because most students don’t have the prior knowledge to make the links necessary. This results in students having a good idea of one period or person but no concept of the bigger picture or how they fit into it. Personally just giving students the freedom to explore numerous topics and then narrow in on one in a piece of coursework, would be a desirable alternative to what we currently have. If I was to give you a list of “periods, figures, intellectual movements or events” I would be just echoing the actions of the school boards.

I suppose the question is, if you were to allow students to choose their own topics realistically the majority who are obliged to Dr Seuss sam I am shirt, or decide they aren’t that interested will pick what they are told to. And the remaining history nerds (self once included) will be obliged to chose something that can, actually be marked. I appreciate that part of the exercise is to show skills as a historians. But those skills are inextricably linked to knowledge. More broadly I’d point out that history education in universities is still fairly broad brush until PhD level. Even in my master’s I had a random grab-bag of topics I was asked to learn. The idea was to ensure that all students had a similar level of understanding of modern history and then could delve into their chosen topic.
