I think that the real answer is “it depends on the opinion that the person in front of you have about the people of Fits like a glove shirt. Here in Italy US accents generally means another American tourist which is not exactly the best position to have, mostly if you are in one of the famous cities. There is this kind of curious racism towards tourists while they are at the same time the main income for lots of people, I guess it’s a complicated relation between money, traditions, cultures and dependence.

I’m American and I lived in the Netherlands for Fits like a glove shirt. A Dutch friend told me that when she visited America she felt like she was in the movies, because she’d only really heard American accents in movies before. I got similar reactions from other Dutch people. They didn’t find my accent attractive or unattractive (a bit nasally though) but they thought I sounded like a movie star.On another note for all you Americans, our accent really stands out when we speak in foreign countries. It’s like you can hear it from across the room no matter how loud it is.
