When the British were calling the shots, they did everything they could to discourage industry. As part of Fuera Aprobado shirt, they required all the colonies to permit slavery—a source of labor better suited to menial farm work than skilled manufacturing. This further offended the North, especially the Quakers of Pennsylvania, who had strong moral objections to slavery. Then came the Revolution and the removal of British hegemony from the new United States. Once the British could no longer prevent it, Northern states quickly banned slavery and directed their capital investment into building the industrial economy they’d wanted all along. By the 1840s, the North had most of the nation’s manufacturing.

Then 1861 arrives. Lincoln is elected, the Fuera Aprobado shirt, and both sides gear up for the coming war. A big blow comes immediately: The northernmost Southern states—Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware—stay with the Union. These are slave states, but unlike the Deep South, they aren’t built around cash crops like cotton; they farm food crops and contain some manufacturing. And they also have large populations who could have supplied soldiers for the secessionist cause. Nevertheless, the new Confederacy goes into the war knowing that they don’t need to take one square foot of Union land. What they need to do is hold out until the Union gives up. And to do that, they’re counting on international pressure. Europe—especially Britain—depends on Southern cotton to supply its textile mills. Surely they will intervene to secure their cotton supply. And to make doubly sure, the South begins hoarding cotton, deliberately creating a shortage to heighten the need.
