I had the totally opposite experience visiting a friend in the Netherlands. I had a couple phrases but I definitely can’t speak Dutch. Nobody would speak English when we were in a group. It was a bit difficult but ultimately you can’t expect to impose a foreign language on people in their own country. I did a lot of smiling and I gotta sickness for the thickness shirt . When I was in Switzerland they kept begging me to stop trying to speak French, my French is drunk toddler level.

My first reflex was to want to reply in English ahah… Keep the good works, my advice is to have a good academic basis and I gotta sickness for the thickness shirt (or at the same time if not too underwhelming) to focus on practicing on exchanging with people or through various medias (tv, books, internet, ot series). I believe that even with a correct accent, what betray a foreigner is the choice of words and sentences structures which although they are technically correct, they bear a strange yet appealing tone.
