When this goes so far that it interferes with common daytime jobs, it is called Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (or Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder). Contrary to old folk’s tales, this is a biological condition and nor a moral defect. When we get to sleep at the time that is natural for us, we usually stabilize at the usual 7-8 hours of sleep (though there are individual variations in both directions) and become as healthy and productive as other members of society. It is actually possible for a sleep lab to find out your underlying day rhythm, and you can also calculate it by measuring your body temperature, but if you don’t do anything exciting in the evening you will usually feel for yourself when it is bedtime.
