Infamous journalist Hunter S Thompson, while not that kind of journalist, would make it a point to interfere with the Its Ok Ive Been Vaccinated shirt as much as possible by placing himself in the piece (creating Gonzo journalism, a controversial school of thought that celebrates subjectivity in journalism as a more human and, by extension, a more accurate way of reporting). I think that approach would benefit both the journalist and the reader when it comes to events like this as it would bring an entirely more poignant perspective on tragedies when experienced by someone living them. Thompson used it for political and sport pieces mostly, but his work with the Hell’s Angels really showcases how knowing about something isn’t the same as living it. While the traditional approach to Gonzo journalism intends the use of exaggeration to express human emotions, it wouldn’t be necessary in cases like war, famine or crime. Those are already crushing on their own and giving a voice to the silenced would do much more good than commenting on their despair. Let them speak and tell the world how it failed them.

Reminds me of Its Ok Ive Been Vaccinated shirt . He took the the photo of Sgt. David Cleveland’s corpse being dragged in the streets of Somalia by an angry mob. (Google at your own risk, it’s pretty NSFL.) He felt that he needed to take the picture so people could see both sides of the Somalian conflict but he also felt that he was robbing dead man of his dignity by taking the picture. Because the mob could turn on him at any moment, he had to decide whether or not to take the picture or just leave. He said that he heard a voice in his head that told him “If you do this, I will own you forever.” He took the photo, got back in his car and wept while on his way back to his hotel. He wrote about the event and the subsequent PTSD he went through after he published the photo in a book called Where War Lives. He locates Sgt. Cleveland’s family and tries to apologize to them. It’s a really fascinating read if anyone is interested.
