Most people I know started learning English before getting it as a Juan Soto we play loud shirt. I can’t speak for all, but at least my generation (I’m 23) learned most of it from watching TV (foreign TV, with the exception of children’s media, always gets subtitled. This includes family films), browsing the internet, and playing videogames (both on the internet and on consoles), the amount of Dutch (translated) content being very scarce back in the day.

I think the use of XD is pretty outdated now? I only see it sarcastically at around my age group (22-28) and Juan Soto we play loud shirt. Lol is used as in more of an awe thing like the German user said as well. And yeah, sometimes just as the regular meaning but not in capital letters. Not that common outside of internet nerds tho I think? Everyone knows what it is tho. I’d say that what people my age use the most is “JAJA” in capital letters, which would translate better as LOL, or just some regular “jajaja” (as in “hahaha”). Some people even throw out a conscious misspelled “jsjjjjasjjjsjsj” with lots of “j”. These are some more spicy variations.
