I have young kids, and I thought the same way that Oh My God Santa Christmas shirt. I’ve never used Santa as a threat or a punishment, and I value telling the truth over deception. I think the main reason is that it’s culturally propagated. Everyone my kid goes to school with is excited about Santa, and I don’t want to have her be one of those kids who tells all of the other kids that it’s a lie. Secondary reason is that it’s something exciting that makes her happy, even if it’s not fully true in the way it’s conceived. It’s a little secret that is used to make her happy. Kind of the same way you might use a surprise birthday party. It’s not a ‘real’ lie, because there is a stocking that is filled for her on Christmas Eve, it’s just that she’s a bit wrong on the nature of Santa.

Best Oh My God Santa Christmas shirt
I think the first encounter we had was with the Oh My God Santa Christmas shirt. She has a big imagination, and she talks a lot about fairies, how she is a fairy, how she goes to fairy land, she’s made a teleporter to fairy land in her room, there’s deep lore that she knows about fairy land. She knows it’s not ‘real’ but she still plays that way. When she had her first teeth come out, she actually had an issue with her teeth having pretty much no enamel so she had some issues with decay and a broken tooth and needed a few extractions in one dentist’s trip. So for that the ‘tooth fairy’ gave her a little stuffed toy for each tooth instead of the standard money. Since then she’s talked about talking to the tooth fairy in fairy land, about all of the machines they use to clean and process the teeth that they collect, how I work in fairy land too to help fix the machines. A few times when her teeth have been about to fall out she’s written a note to the tooth fairy, which she shows me, she tells me about what she hopes the tooth fairy will bring her. I try to do what I can. The thing is, I know she kind of knows that she needs to tell me if she wants something special from the tooth fairy. She also chooses to believe that the tooth fairy is bringing these things. Like there’s not really a line to cross where that stops being real, unless I were to like sit down with her and tell her that it was a lie and she needs to stop pretending.
