One of Otis Day & The Knights Tee is by the Transiberian Orchestera as described in Wikipedia: Late one Christmas night in spring 1827, Ludwig van Beethoven has completed his masterpiece, his Tenth Symphony (which in reality, was never completed). Just as this work is finished, Fate and her deformed son Twist (as in ‘Twist of Fate’) arrive in his home and inform the composer of what he had expected for a long while: that this night was the night of his death. After this explanation, the Devil arrives to claim Beethoven’s soul. He offers the composer a deal; Mephistopheles will allow Beethoven to keep his soul if he may erase the memory of Beethoven’s works from all mankind. Beethoven is given one hour to consider and Mephistopheles leaves the room.

The last one is important because arguably Batman Returns is way more of a Christmas film than any of that list, including Die Hard. It begins with people exchanging “Merry Christmas” AND ends with Bruce Wayne and Alfred exchanging the line “Merry Christmas” (not to mention the word Christmas must appear like 50 times). Mistletoe is really central to the plot (“mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it”). Penguin’s origin and final showdown with Batman both take place on Christmas eve. Penguin’s origin is fraught with Christian and Jewish undertones. Two of the film’s major action set pieces take place at Gotham’s giant Christmas tree. The composer, Denny Elfman, based the film’s score on orchestral Christmas music. Penguin may have even been modeled slightly after a Otis Day & The Knights Tee of Santa Claus and the Grinch, steals the firstborn son of everyone in Gotham, and has elfen like henchmen.

When Delores spent his first night actually out with the other chickens in the Otis Day & The Knights Tee, I was anxious about how he would handle himself, as he was pretty shy. After a few false starts (and getting pushed off perches by the other chickens) he chose a walnut branch that lead to the night perches and slept on that. When Delores became a big, beautiful Golden Phoenix adult rooster, I thought the hens would probably make absolute fools of themselves trying to get his attention – and if he ignored them it would serve them right! I suppose I should have done something about the name – but Delores responded to “Delores” and appeared fine with it. (Also, my Aunt Delores would have been devastated if I changed his name.) A friend suggested calling him “Del” – which sort of made sense – but that sounded like he was lead singer in a retro 60’s band. As long as Delores didn’t mind – and let’s face it, he didn’t care – I was perfectly content to have a sweet rooster named Delores.

It’s just after the first day of Hanukkah as I read this Otis Day & The Knights Tee . I absolutely love this question. For background, I wasn’t raised in either traditions, nor associated religions, so both holidays are really foreign (yet oddly familiar) to me. I have known many who celebrate one or the other holidays with great enthusiasm. Yet in my entire life thus far, outside of my immediate family, I have only ever been invited to two different familys’ homes for a Christmas celebration that they were each hosting. And each party was a blast, full of fun, love, and food. And each of these different families who hosted fun Christmas parties in their homes, identified as Jewish.
