The biggest “hint” that Palpatine is in the shadows is also in TFA where Kylo is with Vader’s Raccoon lets get trashed 4th of July shirt and he says “show me again”, the key word being “again” was always the dead give away for me that he was being manipulated from afar. I knew it wasn’t Anakin because he had been redeemed so it was either Snoke or Palpatine and Palpatine was Vader’s master so to me it made sense when he was revealed to be “the voice” behind the mask. I even did posts about it after TLJ was released. So when I saw TROS trailers and the mask showed up again I was stoked to say the least.
To me, it really just seems like people who don’t like these films don’t like Rey so if you don’t like the main character of a trilogy, no shit you’re not going to like anything about it.

I don’t see any reason to defend Rey Palpatine. There was no thought behind it, considering Rey being a Palpatine was not something they decided on until very late intro production of the Raccoon lets get trashed 4th of July shirt. The lines that Kylo speaks when revealing Rey’s lineage were recorded by Adam Driver in a hotel closet on his phone. They didn’t plan on Rey being a Palpatine.
Not going to go on a tangent here, but just to address the reference to the prequels being something that established “the force arising in nobodies”, you have to understand that people are viewing this film with the context of the previous 8 films. Anakin Skywalker may have been nobody when he was 9 years old, but he’s not a nobody. He’s a Skywalker. It’s a powerful bloodline. TROS demystifies everything about the Force. If you don’t come from a powerful bloodline, you are basically useless in this movie. The Force works as a fucking plot magic to just heal people or sense which ship is leading the fleet.
