It is known for shipwrecks but to be fair, there are shipwreck ruins in all of the Great Lakes. I believe that Lake Michigan & Lake Erie have more shipwrecks than Lake Superior. Drownings happen in Lake Superior though most of the annual Great Lakes drownings happen in Lake Michigan and Lake Erie simply because they are by more populated areas and get more visitors. In the case of Lake Erie the shallower waters can get riled up faster by unexpected wind direction changes or pop-up storms. People tend to get careless because they are called ‘lakes’. I used to work as a lifeguard when I was 16 at a Lake Ontario beach and it wasn’t uncommon to run into situations where people who were used to swimming in salt water would get overwhelmed with the heavier, cooler fresh water. Oh, and all of the Great Lakes have rip currents just like the oceans. I love to swim and explore in the Great Lakes but you need to have a healthy respect for them for sure.
