Thanks for Unapologetically Black Educated Black History shirt, Rod. I think a major historical misconception is the danger that the Nazi plan know as Operation Sea Lion posed. Sea Lion was Germany’s plan to cause complete British capitulation, and was set to be enacted after Britain’s defeat in the Battle of Britain and the Battle of the Atlantic. However, Germany’s defeat in these battles led to this plan being abandoned completely. If you ask someone about Sealion, they may cite it as one of the ways in which Germany could have achieved victory during WW2. However, Operation Sea Lion was in fact so ill-conceived that rather than achieving a decisive victory for Nazi Germany, Sea Lion would have resulted in the annihilation of the German war machine, were the operation to be enacted. The Germans did not have the proper landing craft, and planned to launch an amphibious assault across the channel using barges meant for river crossings. These barges would’ve made the troops sitting ducks as they slowly crossed the channel, allowing the Royal Navy to easily pick them off, and this would only be if overcrowded barges did not sink and drown hundreds troops at a time. The Germans also lacked the proper means of supplying troops as they crossed the channel, as their armies were mostly horse-drawn, making them ill-prepared to supply a mass amphibious invasion. A lack of supplies would have greatly hampered any boots on the ground, hampering any real progress into the British Isles. Sea Lion was poorly-conceived plan that many historians and military leaders agree had little to no chance of success, though many members of the public still believe it posed a great threat to the UK.
