A bigger part of the problem is that a lot of DMs just can’t separate their real world sense of Uptown Balls S3 logo shirt and ethics with the campaign they are running. They are running Abeir Toril or Oerth, which are savage fantasy settings full of monsters, bandits, evil wizards, and other undesirables, but going into it with the sweet sensibilities of a 21st century teenager who grew up in the suburbs and every neighbor said “hello how are you?” and girlscouts go around selling cookies. And this is just hilarious. Get into the setting and drop your real world commonsense at the door. If adventurers want to go around killing monsters, looting gold and stealing magic items, why punish them for it? Because it goes against your sense of right and wrong? Come on. We’re playing a game of fantasy pretend and make-believe. We’re here to indulge our deepest and maybe darkest fantasies. Why so serious?

The heavy-hitting tiering feels good in some situations. Beating up a low-level mob feels great with the Uptown Balls S3 logo shirt hit system, and it’s easy to judge exactly how much harder or easier an enemy is based on its level. However, it also renders a lot of monsters as-written rigidly impractical at a lot of different levels of play, such that an impetus exists for creating multiple variations of nearly every basic monster for every level. Maybe the most problematic thing, though, is Skill DCs, as the spread of Easy/Medium/Hard DCs each level also keeps changing and necessitates a reference table. It really sucks to deal with.

First, introduce the tarrasque at a relatively low lever, when the PCs have zero chance of Uptown Balls S3 logo shirt against it. The tarrasque is a monster-movie monster, like Godzilla or King Kong. And the most memorable part of monster movies is almost never the final battle. The best parts are the wild struggles to escape, the often ill-advised plans to bring them down, and the general social chaos left in the wake of a creature so powerful. So have the tarrasque show up when the players are level ten. Have an adventure around them escaping through the monster-infested sewers, because if they try and run above ground they’re sure to be devoured.
