A wireframe isn’t going to tell you what is going to feel like Vintage School Is Important But Volleyball Is Importanter shirt (because it looks good on paper) or what is an odd micro-pattern that seems logical on a static view. A wireframe won’t show you how the site will look on an iPhone or a PC. That’s what prototypes can do, and there’s so many easy to use tools out there to use for rapid prototyping, you’re wasting your time with intentionally obtuse chicken-scratch diagrams, its design theater for the sake process, not problem solving. My teams tend to work in one of two ways. We go from whiteboard to prototype as quickly as possible, or we work at higher (middle) fidelity in mockups which take realistic bad case (long blocks of text, Long, gnarly, slavic last names, pictures of real people, mixed grids of photos in portrait and landscape, etc). We try to model how real content would look, and then we put the mockups into flows. The flows try to tell the same story from state to state, we sweat little details like the number of bars we show on a phone’s connectivity if we’re showing a no-connectivity use case.

A design process is a framework for Vintage School Is Important But Volleyball Is Importanter shirt. If wireframes help, great. If they’re a necessary step for you to get paid for delivering something for a client to sign off on… ok whatever (that’s why I don’t work agency). But if you’re producing wireframes because that’s “the way UX is Done”, stop. You need to think more deeply about the problems you’re trying to solve. If you ask a carpenter “do you start every job with hammering?” he’ll look at you like you’re crazy. Don’t let the tool frame your thinking.
