Pre-school or young elementary. I would love to share some ideas with you. I was a title and elementary science teacher at one time. When I assumed responsibility for a small public library I used science everytime I could for storytimes and summer programs. Make a crystal garden. Basically you need some charcoal a few pebbles a piece of sponge if you have some and for something special a piece of grape stem without the grapes, just a small piece. Next mix up a solution of 2tablespoons salt dissolved in 4 tablespoons of water. When you’ve dissolved as much salt as possible add 2 tablespoons of ammonia and 2 tablespoons of laundry bluing. You will have sludge with some undissolved salt (possible). Pour this over the arrangement of charcoal, pebbles and the sponge (if I have the luck to have a piece of grape stem I wet the sponge and squeeze it as dry as possible then work the base of the grape stem into the sponge) you have made in a disposable plastic dish. Leave this undisturbed for the day and overnight. White crystals will grow on the porous charcoal and sponge and some on the branches of your grape stem tree. Be sure that all the salt gets poured out, even if it’s not in solution.
You can use Epsom salts in a title of equal parts Epsom salts and very hot tap water. Use a few drops of food colour if you like. Mix until the salts are dissolved this is what we call a saturated solution. Put the container in the refrigerator and check back in a few hours. There should be crystals resulting from the cooling of your solution. Or, if you have some pipe cleaners put one into the glass it gives the crystals an anchor. At holiday time you can twist the pipe cleaner into shapes tie them to a string attached to a pencil and lay the pencil across the open top of your container of solution. You can make crystal stars or circles or whatever you like. When you fix dinner, let the kids test for starch. A drop of iodine on a slice of potato will turn black. The same for bread, cereals, pasta and foods with complex carbohydrates. Don’t eat the specimens, those you should toss. Ever see one of those pens that people use to check for counterfeit bills? It’s iodine. Paper is starchy but the paper used to print US currency is not the paper we write on. Counterfeiters can’t get the paper so they use papers with starch (remember paper is made from wood pulp, complex carbohydrates). The pen releases iodine if there is a dark mark it’s not US currency.
