The strength of the D&D community is that the glue that holds it together is a title respect for the creativity of all the individuals that contribute to it… so there is an unspoken expectation that anyone participating brings something to the table and has an openness to collaborate. There needs to be an understanding that, each D&D game is not only a game, but a collaborative story being work-shopped in real-time, with rules and dice used to steer narrative decisions to surprising conclusions. It’s a game, but it’s also an act of creative work, like a creative project. A person who brings a Drow character to the table is all unknowingly sending off some red flags that are warning signs that make other collaborators on the “project” nervous. Those red flags are…
A player who identifies personally with a character of type A or B, may be a title that has some real life conflicts with interpersonal relationships they may be working through, in game. For example if a person, in the real world closely identifies with character A, and they really feel like the hero misunderstood by the world… it may be because they fail to empathize with and see the point of view of other people, so when conflict arises, they cannot see themselves as having done any wrong.  Likewise a person who identifies with character B, may be willing to sacrifice other people’s enjoyment of the game in order to pursue their own story-line for their own personal satisfaction. That person may be intending to use the idea of “acting” “in character” to excuse various forms of selfish or bad behavior. Either character results in the same thing, a player who may do things to the detriment of the game for the other player… but moreover, they will resist or argue at attempts to point out how their behavior may have been a problem. That’s really the key, the refusal to acknowledge where they as a collaborator could improve.  It is not a stretch to say that this often pairs with a level of personal maturity, because in adolescence we all go through stages where we act selfishly and deny or ignore the feelings of others. So a player who identifies over-much with this sort of character, may be considered immature.
